Y Bryn a’r Cwm – The Hill and the Valley. Here in Wales we live in a wooded valley with rocky hillsides either side and streams flowing through the centre. In June and July of 2021, I began a series of mini paintings, or ‘landscape notes’ on index cards. My working process was very simple: to sit on our hill or walk through the valley and simply listen, feel, absorb the essence of the place. Then commit those senses onto card to capture the immediacy of the energies through mark-making, adding and scraping off paint, and noting down any words that came to me as I did so. This series of 18 mini paintings is the result of this experiment.
